Description

A diary of my birding activity covering highlights and photos from my birding adventures. Mainly Norfolk (UK), occasionally beyond. I might mention the odd thing that isn't avian, but for moth and other insect news check out my mothing diary.

Review of 2019 and 2020 - Birds: Skuas, Auks, Divers, Tubenoses, Storks, Gannets, Cormorants, Spoonbills and Herons

Great Skuas, Staffa, 11th June 2019

Pomarine Skua Stercorarius pomarinus - 2 past Sheringham on 21st October 2019 (adult and juvenile).

Arctic Skua Stercorarius parasiticus - No records worth mentioning.

-----------------------------------

AUKS (family ALCIDAE)

Razorbill Alca torda - No records worth mentioning.

-----------------------------------

DIVERS (family GAVIIDAE)

Red-throated Diver Gavia stellata - No records worth mentioning.  The only diver species I recorded in these 2 years.

-----------------------------------

STORM-PETRELS (family HYDROBATIDAE)

Storm Petrel/Leach's Petrel Hydrobates pelagicus/Oceanodroma leucorhoa - I got brief views of a petrel with a white rump past Pendeen (Cornwall) on 5th October 2020.  It didn't seem to be flying like a Leach's Petrel (apparently the more likely species here at this time of year) and I was almost, but not quite, ready to call it a Storm Petrel.  However I won't put it down as I'm not sure - especially as another observer who was positioned out of view saw what he took to be a Leach's Petrel.

-----------------------------------

FULMARS and SHEARWATERS (family PROCELLARIIDAE)

Fulmar Fulmarus glacialis - No records worth mentioning.

Sooty Shearwater Ardenna grisea - One past Sheringham on 21st October 2019.

Manx Shearwater Puffinus puffinus - Up to 11 past Pendeen (Cornwall) on 4 dates between 4th and 8th October 2020.  None in Norfolk in either year, which is probably more a reflection of how little time I spent at the coast than any lack of birds passing.

Balearic Shearwater Puffinus mauretanicus - 5 past Pendeen (Cornwall) on 5th October 2020 and 2 past on 8th.

-----------------------------------

STORKS (family CICONIIDAE)

White Stork Ciconia ciconia - One roosting on North Elmham Church on 6th April 2020.  The following morning it was feeding in Church Field.  This bird, with blue ring inscribed GB46, was a wild-bred bird from Poland, brought to the Wintershall Estate in Surrey for rehabilitation following an injury.  It left there in 2019 and toured the country before spending the night in North Elmham.  It then returned to the south coast but came back to Norfolk in August (but not North Elmham this time).

White Stork, North Elmham, 7th April 2020

-----------------------------------

GANNETS (family SULIDAE)

Gannet Morus bassanus - 900 past Sheringham on 21st October 2019; no other records worth mentioning.

Gannet from the Oban to Craigmure ferry, 9th June 2019

-----------------------------------

CORMORANTS (family PHALACROCORACIDAE)

Shag Phalacrocorax aristotelis - A few seen on Mull in June 2019 and more in Cornwall in October 2020.

Cormorant Phalacrocorax carbo - Small numbers regularly seen flying over the meadows.

Cormorant, North Elmham Cathedral Meadows, 4th April 2019

Cormorant, Llobregat Delta (Spain), 22nd February 2020

-----------------------------------

SPOONBILLS (family THRESKIORNITHIDAE)

Spoonbill Platalea leucorodia - Small numbers seen at Fairburn Ings (Yorkshire), Titchwell, Burnham Overy, Brancaster Staithe and Llobregat Delta (Spain).

Spoonbill, Burnham Overy, 12th June 2020

Spoonbill (and Grey Heron), Llobregat Delta (Spain), 22nd February 2020

-----------------------------------

HERONS (family ARDEIDAE)

Cattle Egret Bubulcus ibis - 2 at Brancaster on 1st June 2019, 7 at Burnham Overy 6th October and 8 there the next day.  3 at Burnham Overy on 12th June 2020.

Cattle Egret, Brancaster, 1st June 2019

Grey Heron Ardea cinerea - Regularly seen at the meadows and occasionally at home.

Grey Heron, Llobregat Delta (Spain), 22nd February 2020

Grey Heron, North Elmham, 27th April 2020

Grey Heron, Higher Bosistow (Cornwall), 7th October 2020 - sadly it was only a few wing-coverts that showed rusty colouration and the thighs were whitish-grey

Rook and Grey Heron, North Elmham, 6th November 2020

Great White Egret Ardea alba - Not the rarity it once was but I was still happy to find this species in the Wensum Valley in both years, at Rybugh on 4th October 2019 and flying over the meadows on 4th November 2020.  Elsewhere recorded at Burnham Overy/Holkham on 2 occasions in 2019, Llobregat Delta (Spain) (2 in February 2020) and Brancaster (2 over on 14th October 2020).

Great White Egret, Great Ryburgh, 4th October 2019

Great White Egret, North Elmham Cathedral Meadows, 4th November 2020

Little Egret Egretta garzetta - A new species for the house in 2020 when one flew over on 24th April.  Sometimes seen at the meadows (12 dates in 2019 and 9 dates in 2020) - mostly involving single birds (but 2 on 4th January 2020) and mostly just flying over (but one viewable as it fed in the river on 2nd March 2020).  Elsewhere records included 65 at Stiffkey Flood on 14th October 2020.
